If you didn’t tune in for Association Chat #assnchat Tuesday, you missed a good one! We talked all things innovation with expert Amanda Kaiser (@SmoothThePath).
The Topic: Demystifying Innovation
Check out the highlights of the chat below or listen in to the replay here:
Our weekly host, KiKi L’Italien, began the chat with a magical statement, “Some of the most successful association’s explore innovation through trial and error.”
Innovation is a huge part when it comes to getting ahead and making good choices.
KiKi asked Amanda, “What’s the difference between revolutionary and evolutionary innovation?”
Amanda broke it down by stating, “Revolutionary innovation is something the association has never done before. It’s big and scary. Evolutionary innovation is when you take something and make it better.”
However, Amanda heeded caution in regards to evolutionary innovation, “There’s a danger of only making what you do better because you may make yourself obsolete.”
Leading us all to wonder if innovation is a science or simply luck…
“Innovation is a science because there is a step-by-step process,” says Amanda. “It’s not all up to luck and heroes.”
We absolutely LOVED that quote!
“It’s not all up to luck and heroes.”
So, where does innovation begin if it’s not all luck and heroes?
“Innovation begins with the CEO and management team,” says Amanda. “The entire team needs to move from ‘I’m afraid of this.’ to ‘I’m a champion of this.’”
Amanda wants us all to know that, “Your member’s problems are your biggest opportunities.”
Tim Parsons, an #assnchat viewer and COO/CMO of 5:00 Films, commented: “Start with the goal and build a process that fits the goal! If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”
The biggest takeaways from this chat?
- Innovation doesn’t have to be big innovation.
- CEO’s should be cheerleaders and champions for their team.
- Tandem culture & process for efficient innovation projects.
