What Really Makes a Great Association Leader?

There are countless books that have been published about leadership over the years. But what really makes for a great association leader today and how has it changed or remained the same?

On November 19, 2019, at 2 pm ET we will discuss “What Makes a Great Leader?” for the weekly Association Chat Tweetchat. The discussion is free to join and anyone is invited to participate.

Many of the pillars for today’s leadership knowledge came from books like Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Xenophon’s Cyropaedia, and later business management guru Peter Drucker’s 39 books on the topic, among many others.

Would what made a great association leader in the 1950s be the same as that of an association leader in 2020s? Where do we go from here?

It can be fun relating the principles of Cyrus the Great to leadership for today’s associations. (He founded the Persian Empire in sixth century B.C., after all. Talk about a tough project!) We can learn a great deal from ancient monarchs on the topic of global expansion. But they probably didn’t have to worry about whether their association needed an AMS or not.

What are some of the unique challenges association leaders are facing? Where are association leaders developing and honing their skills? What are they reading and listening to? How are they learning? What are the traits embodied by our strongest association leaders and what are the traits we need to recognize and develop in emerging leaders (and maybe ourselves)?
